The
benefits to a Travel-Rec league are far
reaching. A few of them are:
- Keep
11+ year olds involved with ice hockey, where in the past they may have
turned away due to the emphasis on body checking.
- Allow
the physical maturation of 11-14 year olds to happen more naturally,
allowing later developing children the opportunity to more safely stay
within the game they've enjoyed since being a Mite.
- Allow
11-14 year olds to develop and concentrate on their skills and mature
physically while becoming more equal in size, strength and motor skills.
This is the prescribed method per the Herb Brooks Foundation.
- Introduce
children to "travel hockey" while having fun and allow them to
decide in future years if they want to move to "true travel"
hockey and/or high school hockey
Teams
and organizations thinking of joining our league should be:
- "House",
"House Select", "B, C, or D" level teams
- Prepared
to play a "home and home" game with each member team
- Prepared
to play in a league where ALL teams qualify for postseason play
- Concentrating
on letting their teams and children have fun, while playing hockey
- Prepared
to police any potential parent/fan poor behavior
During
the 2006-2007 season; the foundation for the
league took root with various teams playing exciting, non-check games across
the NY-metropolitan region. Our organization is proud to serve the
youth of the area, keeping fair play, good sportsmanship and skill
development as foundations for their development.
The
MYHL enables various house leagues, house-select, "B, C or D"
level teams to enjoy all the benefits of travel hockey without the addition
of the ultra competitive nature that forces teams to focus on qualifying for
state, district and national tournaments. The MYHL caters to
organizations and players serving the
New York
,
New Jersey
,
Pennsylvania
and
Connecticut
areas. In our first year, we expect to have over 160 of the area's
youth from the ages of 11 to 14 to participate in programs within our
league.
We
expect the league to be a learning experience that has been tempered with
competitive play, good sportsmanship and fun.
