Learn
to Skate (LTS)
Whether
you simply want to overcome the "wall clinging
phase" or master some of the fundamental skills of the
sport, this is the place to start.
At
the BSA Figure Skating Center, newcomers to the ice may enroll
in basic skills training either through our Learn to Skate
(LTS) group program or by requesting private lessons.
Private
lessons in basic skills are held on our public skating
sessions or on our freestyle sessions. Lessons run from 15
minutes to one hour in length. Please contact the figure
skating office if you wish to schedule private lessons with
one of our P.S.A. rated professional coaches. |

Learn
to Skate Session #79 |
|
|
|
September
6th, 2008 - October 29th, 2008 |
|
|
| |
| Lessons |
|
Specific
elements are learned at each basic skills level. Lessons begin with
the basic skills category which provides the foundation for all
jumps, spins and maneuvers. These include the fundamental skills of
the sport: how to fall and stand up, swizzles, gliding, and skating
forward. As the student becomes more proficient in these skills,
additional and more exciting elements are added: snowplow stops, one
foot glides, two foot spins, crossovers, 3- turns, lunges, bunny
hops, shoot the ducks, and T-stops
When the skater can perform these elements with proficiency, s/he
earns a badge in that level and progresses to the next one. |

| Sessions |
|
There
are LTS sessions available for youth, adults, Special Olympic
athletes, and private groups (e.g. play groups, nursery schools,
home schools, and Scout troops). Learn-to-skate (LTS) sessions are
held once a week for 6 to 8 weeks. Session fees include a limited
number of free admissions to any public skating session between the
first and last class, as well as skate rental during group
instruction time.
During an LTS session, the
ice is coned off into lanes with each lane designated for a class in
one of these skill levels. Students are assigned to a class
according to ability. Once all basic skill levels are mastered, the
budding skater may choose to enroll in booster lessons or in private
lessons for further training.
Beginning in July 2008, BSA will be following the Basic Skills

| Requirements |
|
Properly
adjusted bike helmets and gloves/mittens are required for all
skaters in the New Skater classes through Alpha level classes. Warm clothes that
allow flexibility and freedom of movement, in addition to properly
laced skates that fit well and support the ankle, will help the
skater to progress faster.
