What Are the Learn to Skate Class Requirements?

What to do on the First Day of Classes

1.  Arrive 30 minutes early.  You need time to get your child’s skates on and get to the appropriate lane.

2.  Go directly to Skate Rental which is located in the Red Rink, down the steps to the left.  Get a skate size one size smaller than their shoe size.  The skates should be laced to the top.  If your child’s ankles are bending when they walk, either the skate is too big or it is not laced up properly.  If you have questions about lacing up your child’s skates, see your instructor.

3.  Your child’s name must be printed on their bike helmet.  This will speed up taking attendance.  Please have their helmet, coats, and gloves already on them.

4.  Wednesday classes go to the orange rink.  Go through the arcade to the back room.  The orange rink is to your right.

5.  Saturday classes go to the red rink.

6.  Find your lane and meet your instructor off ice. The lane number and instructor can be found in your confirmation letter.  The instructor’s names will be posted on the rink glass.  The instructor will take the skaters onto the ice on the first day of class.  For future classes, please have the skaters on the ice in the appropriate lane.

7.  Please note:  it is often necessary during the first two classes to move a skater to a different class based on their skating abilities.  If your child is moved, please make note of the new instructor’s name and lane number and report to that lane for future classes.

8.  HAVE FUN!!!

What is a Public Skating Session?

A public skate session is open to all the public.  No hockey sticks or pucks are allowed.  Spinning and jumping is not allowed.   Many instructors give private lessons during these sessions.  A section in the center of the ice is coned off for the exclusive use of instructors giving lessons.  Schedules are available on the pillars in the lobby as well as on the main page of our website.

What is a Learn to Skate Open Session?
An Open LTS Session is closed to the general public and only open to those participating in our Learn To Skate program.  The participant’s families are welcome to join them on the ice.  Many instructors give private lessons during these sessions. Schedules are available on the pillars in the lobby.

What is a Freestyle Session?
A Freestyle session is for figure skating only.  These sessions are not recommended for anyone below the Alpha Level.  The skaters practice skating moves, jumps, and spins.  A CD player and tape deck are provided so the skaters can practice their programs.  Skaters take turns playing their music and wear a yellow vest while their music is playing and they are practicing their program.  All skaters must yield to the one wearing the yellow vest.  Do not stay stationary in one spot.  Do not hang around the center ice or the jumping corners.  There are high level skaters on freestyle sessions that are moving fast and performing double jumps and complicated footwork.  Look out for all other skaters.  Instructors give lessons during these sessions.  Schedules are available on the pillars in the lobby.

Why Do I Need a Membership to ISI?

ISI stands for Ice Skating Institute.  BSA uses the ISI curriculum for the Learn To Skate Program.  The ISI is a recreational ice skating program developed for those who skate for fun and pleasure.  It is a great building block for first time skaters.  The program provides a system of tests for all skaters from the beginners to the most advanced.  These tests are part of the Learn-To-Skate program. The “evaluations” held during the final two group lessons at BSA serve as the skater’s tests.

ISI offers numerous figure skating competitions throughout the area that allow skaters to compete at all levels.  The competitions are comprised of smaller flights that allow each participant to receive a medal.  These competitions are fun and serve as a morale and confidence booster.  It is great experience for the skater to perform in front of an audience in a low pressure setting.  If you are interested in having your child compete, please talk with your instructor.
